Quick thoughts on…
Johnny Cash biopic “Walk the Line.” How is it compared to last year’s “Ray”? And what can be said of its lead perfoirmances from Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon?

I don’t know much of Johnny Cash, so I’m no judge of Joaquin Phoenix’s authencity in potraying the country legend. But does one have to know Johnny Cash to enjoy the movie? No. But after “Ray” last year, the movie seems less accomplished and less original. But “Walk the Line” has the stuff of a great Oscar contender – great acting, story, and direction. The movie actually works more of a love story rather than one character study. Reese Witherspoon, who plays Cash’s second wife June Carter, does an amazing job. I can’t picture any other actress who can master a combo of comic perkiness (Carter’s stage personality) and emotional stubborness. While it’s true that this is Johnny Cash’s story, Witherspoon as Carter is the heart of the movie.GRADE: A-
